The humble but glorious burrito was first served in:
- El Faro restaurant, in San Francisco’s Mission District, around 1961 to feed the local firefighters
- Pancho’s Mexican Taqueria in Atlantic City where they were first made with traditional corn tortillas
- Northern Mexico, where burritos are just another type of taco
The answer is Northern Mexico. According to José R. Ralat, “Burritos are tacos” is supported by my work across the borderlands, especially in Texas. It’s also backed up by the work of writers specializing in Mexican food who have been doing this longer than I have.
