Vancouver Area Restaurants Go GE-Free Print

A few Vancouver and area restaurants commit to offering food that hasn't been genetically engineered.

Details below, from GE-Free Solutions:

Vancouver, BC (February 26th, 2009). Restaurants in the Vancouver area have come together with GE-Free Solutions to explore the value of non-genetically engineered options. Although Canadian law does not currently require GE food to be labeled as such, there are growing health and ethical concerns related to the prevalence of GE ingredients in our food.  Because of this, GE-Free Solutions is currently engaged in a consumer awareness and education program, urging restaurants to help spread awareness of GE food amongst consumers and increase the availability of GE-free food and beverage.

Last night, several of the participating restaurants gathered at Burnaby's Great Bear Pub for the launch of GE Free Solutions' Foodservice Provider Verification Program.  This program is designed to empower and support local foodservice providers to offer non-genetically engineered food, and will also focus on consumer education.

At this time, participating restaurants include: the Agro Café, Baby Eats, Current Coffee, Great Bear Pub, Nature's Garden Organic Deli, Qoola Yogurt & Fruit and Peake of Catering. These restaurants will be showcased online at greenpagesdirectory.net and at tinybites.ca in the near future.

GE-Free Solutions' long-term goal is to influence the policy regarding the labeling of GE food and beverage in Canada.  Nigel Tunnacliffe, CEO of GE-Free Solutions, believes in the importance of this issue because, as he says, 'we all have the right to know what's in our food.'
