I received a mysterious package in the mail today. Thinking it was an early Christmas box from my overly keen family on the other side of the country, I trudged up the road to the post office, the notice flapping in my mittened hand. I was having bratty thoughts about opening a present or two, despite “Do not open until Dec. 25” warnings.

The nice post office lady scurried to the back room to get my package, plunking a bulky box in front of me that had a Vancouver Island—not an other-side-of-the-country—return address.

Puzzled, I walked off with my curious cargo, and then it hit me.

Bees! My bees had arrived.

A Year in the Life of a Wannabe-Gardener Print

It's about a year since I began the community garden experiment, and I really owe all of you an update on just how my garden has grown. Overall I suppose it's been a success, but I have (perhaps unrealistically) high standards, and I can't honestly say it's been a screaming success. Oh, you and I might both have heard my garden screaming at times, but let's not confuse that with success.

It's kinda like the Invasion of the Body Snatchers - the original 1956 version, of course. Initially there's just these little pods, but you come back a couple of hours later and there's a fully formed human (or alien that looks just like your loved-one).
