Last week a kind and generous soul offered me two kilograms of Mirabelle plums from a friend's tree. I'd never heard of Mirabelle plums before, but I'm not one to turn down an offer of fresh, local fruit. Especially when it's free. She also happens to live about four blocks from me so it was very easy to walk over there, nab a big bag of plums, and come home.
They are small yellow plums, flavourful, slightly tart and satisfying in the way that store-bought plums rarely are. But I discovered that my husband Phil is not a big fan of plums (unless they are greengages or foraged blue plums that he has had to climb a tree to acquire). I also soon discovered that two kilograms of plums is quite a lot to eat by yourself, especially when your tummy is already feeling the effects of too many cherry-eating-and-spitting contests.
What to do? I made salsa with them. Fortunately, it turns out that Phil likes Yellow Plum Salsa quite a lot. In fact, last night he stated that he likes Yellow Plum Salsa even more than he likes traditional tomato salsa. And believe me, he's a big fan of tomato salsa. We ate it with grilled salmon burgers, having bought a few excellent house-made patties from Superior Fish in Ladner. We spooned some onto quesadillas as well. Both combinations were fabulous. The recipe is here.
