Finding her way to Pickens, South Carolina in 2008 while doing a 26-city, 4100-mile bike tour, guitar strapped to the side, Rachel VanSlyke set up home in Red Clay Hill, a cabin that charmed. She lived “connected to my needs” recycling water, walking 13 miles roundtrip to town while her bicycle was in for repairs and “feasting” from her own garden. She dreams of starting an artists’ colony in the area but, for now, divides her time between the Upstate and Nashville, sharing her music and a passion for sustainable, inspired living.
