Farmers Markets

Minneapolis Farmers Market
This giant market on North Lyndale Avenue on the edge of downtown Minneapolis features local fruits, vegetables, farmstead items, and other products from the Central Minnesota Vegetable Growers Association, a member-based, nonprofit organization with more than 200 members. The Lyndale Market is open seven days a week, from mid-April until mid-November, with many vendors continuing to sell on Saturdays throughout the winter months. An additional market, The Nicollet Mall Market, is open on Thursdays from May through October.

St. Paul Farmers Market
Established in 1853, the St. Paul Farmers’ Market is open every Saturday in Lowertown. Beyond the Saturday Lowertown market, the 145-member St. Paul Growers’ Association has 22 markets throughout the Twin Cities metro area, some on weekdays, some on weekends, most of them seasonal.

Neighborhood markets in the Twin Cities and suburbs abound. Minnesota Grown, a program of the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, lists more than 150 farmers markets statewide. The list is too numerous to mention here, but these are three of our favorites:

Midtown Farmers Market
This vibrant market is one of the most accessible, too: it is on both the bus and light-rail lines and also has plenty of free parking, even though it’s in the heart of the city, just off East Lake Street. Vendors only sell items grown/made in Minnesota or Wisconsin. Market is open Saturdays, early May through October, and Tuesdays, early June through October.

Mill City Farmers Market

Seward Coop Grocery & Deli — Minneapolis
Seward was one of the first coops in the area, opening in 1972 on the corner of 22nd and Franklin avenues, with the help of members from what was then called North Country Coop. In 2009, Seward opened the doors of its new home, a gorgeous, 25,600 sq.-ft. building, also on Franklin Avenue. The coop also now has more than 8,800 members.

The Wedge Coop — Minneapolis
Another pioneer in the early food coop movement, The Wedge Coop has served its members and neighborhoods since 1974. In a relatively small space in South Minneapolis, this coop attracts big numbers. For example, The Wedge now has more than 14,000 members. Plus, in 2010, the Star Tribune reported that the coop’s total annual “patronage refund” to its members hit $1 million for the first time, marking one of the largest such distributions in the country. The Star Tribune also reported that, based on sales, The Wedge is one of the nation’s largest single-store natural foods cooperatives.
