Neighborhood Markets Neighborhood markets in the Twin Cities and suburbs abound. Minnesota Grown, a program of the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, lists more than 150 farmers markets statewide. The list is too numerous to mention here, but these are three of our favorites:
Midtown Farmers Market This vibrant market is one of the most accessible, too: it is on both the bus and light-rail lines and also has plenty of free parking, even though it’s in the heart of the city, just off East Lake Street. Vendors only sell items grown/made in Minnesota or Wisconsin. Market is open Saturdays, early May through October, and Tuesdays, early June through October. East Lake Street & 22nd Avenue South, by Highway 55/Hiawatha, Minneapolis 612-724-7457 www.midtownfarmersmarket.org
Mill City Farmers Market Open Saturdays from early May through mid-October, this market, as Minnesota Grown reports, was the first to focus on locally grown, seasonal foods from sustainable and organic farmers and small businesses in the region. 704 South Second Street, Minneapolis 612.341.7580 www.millcityfarmersmarket.org
Kingfield Farmers Market Small space, big crowds: This bustling market nourishes Minneapolis’ Kingfield neighborhood with local produce, garden plants, free-range meats, cheese, honey, coffee, and more. Open Sundays late May through October. 4310 Nicollet Avenue South, Minneapolis 612-823-4550, 612-207-7893
