Listeria Alert: 130 Cheese Products Have Been Recalled
According to Food Safety News, as of February 10, 130 cheeses produced by Deutsch Kase Haus LLC have been recalled for Listeria monocytogenes. “A variety of cheese brands are involved, including Sargento, Sara Lee, Saputo, Dutch Valley and Guggisberg, as well as a variety of store-branded products sold by Meijer, Albertsons, H-E-B and other retailers.”

Vanilla Is about to Get More Expensive
Bad news for bakers. Food Business News reports that vanilla from Madagascar, the world’s largest vanilla producer, now costs more than $500 per kilogram, which is double the price this time last year. A poor crop season is to blame.

German Supermarket, Lidl, Is Coming to America

UC Davis Winemaking Students Can Sell Their Wine
Score a point for common sense. Decanter.com shares the good news: “California’s top winemaking school has previously been legally constrained to dispose of huge amounts of wine made from top Napa Valley vineyards. But the recent implementation of the Senate Bill 683 law late last year means that the students’ finished product can now be to be sold to local producers, and served by the bottle at special occasions.”

20% of the World’s Food Is Wasted
Speaking of food waste, a new study from the University of Edinburgh shows that “Almost 20 per cent of the food made available to consumers is lost through over-eating or waste. The world population consumes around 10 per cent more food than it needs, while almost nine per cent is thrown away or left to spoil, researchers say.” – Science Daily
