This October we are sponsoring an Eat Local Challenge, encouraging people to take a pledge to eat only locally grown/produced food for the 31 days of October.
How It Works You can choose to eat only foods produced within a 100 or 150 mile radius, or Santa Barbara County or the tri-county region or even the state of California. You might decide to eat only produce that is grown in Santa Barbara County, but dairy, meat and other food products might come from within 150 miles or elsewhere in California.
You can also choose to have exceptions that you will not be eating locally (i.e. coffee, tea or spices). Or you can choose food products like tea or coffee that are roasted or packaged by local companies.
The important thing is to benefit from the experience trying to eat nothing but locally produced food. Please read Janice Cook Knight's article on the Eat Local Challenge for more inspiration.
How Can Find Local Food? How Do I Get Started? You can RSVP for the Challenge on Facebook here. You can also find lots of resources right here on this website. Check the Source Guide for local businesses. And join our Google Group to find out all sorts of information about local food and to share your finds. Some topics include "Local Coffee" and "Local Peanut Butter."
