5 Energizing Morning Drinks that Aren’t Coffee
For many of us, nothing tastes and smells as good as a cup of hot, aromatic coffee brewing first thing in the morning. It almost feels as though that first sip of our Starbucks is enough to perk us up enough to make it through our commute and, essentially, our next cup. But if you’re looking to maybe veer off the caffeinated path and try something new (without falling asleep, of course), these healthful, energizing drinks may be worth a taste.
We get it: slurping down a glass of something that is essentially grass first thing in the morning isn’t quite the wakeup call you’ve always wanted. But if you’re looking for more beneficial ways to get that burst of energy, wheatgrass may be for you. A source of living chlorophyll, wheatgrass is full of iron, that important vitamin that aids in red blood cell production (aka energy). Whether you take it in a shot or mix it up in a juice, this morning drink will get you moving in no time.
Pomegranates often slip under our radar when it comes to healthful foods, but these antioxidant-filled fruits can be a sweet-and-tart option when looking for a morning boost. Not only do they increase blood circulation, giving you energy, but they also rev up brainpower—and let’s be honest, who doesn’t need that first thing in the morning. Many of the pre-made pomegranate juices you may find in your local store, however, are often packed with sugar and calories. We recommend stocking up on some fresh fruit and juicing your own at home.
Leafy greens, which are filled with vitamins and minerals, never let us down, do they? If you want to go the healthy route first thing in the a.m., try swapping your mug of joe for a veggie-filled green smoothie. From avocado to kale to spinach, the ingredient options are endless and so are the health benefits. Not only are you waking yourself up, you’re starting your body off strong with the proper nutrition it needs.
Hot lemon water
Ever heard the advice that if you’re feeling tired, drink water? Hydration is always a good idea, especially in the morning, but you don’t have to settle for a plain glass of H20. For a comforting morning drink to fill up your favorite mug, try heating a cup of warm water and dropping in a slice of lemon. While the water is hydrating, the addition of lemon gives a boost of energy due to its excess of negatively charged atoms. Once these atoms hit your digestive tract—boom!—time to wake up.
A classic caffeinated drink, a steaming hot mug of tea will never steer you wrong. Black tea has an endless amounts of health benefits, from stress relief to cancer prevention. But one of its most popular uses is, of course, its source of caffeine. If you’re looking for a morning pick-me-up but coffee is a bit too much for you, you may want to consider this hot drink. Its moderate caffeine levels still give you the boost you need, but is not too high that it becomes overstimulating.
