Edible Communities’ 2009 EDDY Awards Honor Excellence in Member Publications
Annually, the publishers of Edible Communities, Inc. gather to exchange information and ideas and to honor excellence within their publications with the EDDY Awards. Judged by a panel of outside experts from the food and publishing worlds, the awards recognize outstanding writing, photography and marketing campaigns. This year’s EDDY Awards were sponsored and judged by Saveur magazine. On hand during the Edible Communities annual publishers meeting to present the awards were Dave Lieberman, Food Network celebrity and contributing editor to Saveur, and Kristin Cohen, Associate Publisher of Saveur. Editor-in-Chief, James Oseland, offered the following comment about the awards: “I've never been much of a contest sort of person—after all, I was always, ALWAYS the last kid picked for kickball or softball or whatever, which sort of made me permanently allergic to all forms of competition. Nevertheless, competitions CAN help us. They help us to collectively raise the bar, to strive and to seek and to try to do even better than before, which isn't really such a bad thing. That said, what an amazing group of entries were submitted to this year's Edible Communities EDDY awards for excellence in publishing. Each of them—and I do mean each—was a singular gem, a testament to the entertaining and valuable work that all the Edible editors and contributors are doing. Your efforts in helping to keep regional American food journalism alive and thriving have never been more important. Keep up the amazing work. Please.”

Langeland Award of Excellence for Outstanding Community Service
In 2007, Edible Communities, Inc. created the Langeland Award of Excellence for Outstanding Community Service. The annual award is named for its first recipients, Doug and Dianne Langeland, publishers of Edible Cape Cod, the second Edible magazine to launch. The award celebrates the Edible magazine publisher who provides their local food network with the most community service.
2009 Langeland Award Recipient
Marla Camp, publisher of Edible Austin, is the recipient of the 2009 Langeland Award of Excellence for Outstanding Community Service. Marla has taken a strong leadership role in increasing the visibility and viability of local food in the Austin area, both as the publisher of Edible Austin and in her work creating and serving on the City of Austin and Travis County Sustainable Food Policy Board as well as in her service to multiple community boards and groups. Events that she has created or co-produced have raised over $90,000 for supporting local food nonprofits, emergency funding and education. She has worked tirelessly to connect local consumers, chefs, farmers and other food producers through events such as the Edible Austin Foodmaker Pavilion at Maker Faire Austin and Edible Austin’s signature Eat Local Week. According to the Langelands, “Many of our fellow Edible publishers are becoming real lynchpins in their local foodsheds, so the competition for the prize this year was steep. The fact that Marla is a such a visionary, coupled with her leadership in linking producers to consumers, pushed her nomination over the top.” Carol Ann Sayle of Boggy Creek Farm says that “next to—but not below—the miracle of a good rain for Central Texas' farmers and gardeners, the biggest support for local food the last couple of years has been Marla Camp.” And Erin Flynn of Green Gate Farms says that “Marla's passion is inspiring, and can't thank her enough for pursuing her vision with such tenacity." The cash prize donated by Edible Communities that accompanies the Langeland Award will be used to help fund Urban Roots, a youth development program of YouthLaunch that uses sustainable agriculture as a means to transform the lives of young people and increase the access of healthy food in Austin.
