Welcome to Smart Food, the Edible Radio podcast hosted by Jane Black.
Jane’s guest today is Rodney North of Equal Exchange.
No matter how much you love chocolate, you probably feel a little guilty about eating it. Too many calories, too much fat and, especially at this time of year, just too much chocolate. Period. But there’s another reason that eating a lot of chocolate might weigh on your conscious: the way it is produced. Despite almost ten years of commitments from major chocolate companies, abusive child labor, human trafficking, and forced labor continue to plague the West African cocoa industry, which accounts for 70 percent of the world’s supply. On this episode of Smart Food, fair-trade cooperative Equal Exchange’s Rodney North talks about the politics of chocolate and how enjoy it – guilt-free — this holiday season.
