Art and food come together to support the Mid-Ohio Foodbank this weekend for Too Yummy! We here at Edible Columbus love to support all things food and art, especially when it comes to raising funds for those in need. Created by the Couchfire Collective, this is the second installment of Too Yummy! The three-day art show will feature fun-filled, food-themed artwork and events at the Ohio Art League in the South Campus Gateway from July 30-August 1, 2010.

On Saturday, July 31 the opening reception will kick off events from 6-9pm and coincide with all sorts of other Arts in the Alley events. We’ll have our summer issue of Edible Columbus available at the gallery... Read more...

Porchetta_SaltimbocaTwo weeks ago I was invited to be a judge at the Brio/Bravo restaurant group's Culinary Competition. It’s a contest that starts with 46 Chefs in 20 states and narrows it down to the best six. It’s here in Columbus that the six Chefs compete for their original creation to be on the Bravo menu and a trip to Italy to further their culinary education.

The Chefs were very passionate about their presentation and the story behind their dish. The winning Chef, Jason Kapela, from Des Moines, Iowa was passionate about local food and ingredients.

When one thinks of eating well one thinks of good food. A few weeks ago I was contemplating what it means to eat well and digest good food. I realized that, beyond eating, I’m consuming all of the aspects of my life each day—my work, my interactions with family and friends, the emails I receive, the news I hear…all of it can be considered “food” for my body and mind in one way or another.

Of all the reasons I didn't join a CSA sooner, The Weird Vegetable Problem was not among them.  Serious doubts about making the Saturday morning pick-up each week? Check. A chronic inability to anticipate July's bounty in frigid February, when sign-ups happen? Double check. But being on the receiving end of strange roots and unidentified green objects, a concern I've heard cited by more than a few folks? No worries. In fact, it was not fear but love of eccentric produce that kept me on the CSA sidelines, until now.

Honeybee colonies used for pollinating commercial crops are dying off at an unprecedented rate. More than 1/3 of the commercial bee colonies across the country perished this past winter and many were reported without dead bees present — a sign of Colony Collapse Disorder (hives are found with honey, larvae, and the queen intact, but with no bees).

Bees pollinate most of the fruits, vegetables, and nuts, that we rely on for food, as well as alfalfa for livestock feed. Without them, our diet... Read more...
