SMALL FARM DREAMING
By Melissa Wiley

Chances are if you’re reading this you enjoy local food and strive to support local farmers. Maybe you’ve even thought about becoming a farmer yourself. If so, you’ll be interested in an upcoming course being presented by Piedmont Environmental Council called "Exploring the Small-Farm Dream: Is Starting an Agricultural Business Right for You?"

The four-session course (with an optional fifth-session field trip), held in partnership with Piedmont Virginia Community College, is designed to guide you through an initial exploratory process to prepare for the next steps—should you decide to take them—toward starting your own farming operation. Students are shown how to bridge the gap between ideas and action (aka, a reality check) through self-assessment of skills and resources, in-depth discussions with local farm business owners, and relationship building with others interested in starting agricultural businesses. Between classes, students will complete homework exercises and research assignments.

Exploring the Small-Farm Dream

Presented by Piedmont Environmental Council at Piedmont Virginia Community College; February 1, 8, 15, 22; 6 to 8:30 p.m., with optional field trip to Local Food Hub Educational Farm, March 6, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

How to Register: 1) Visit www.pvcc.edu. Find the course in Spring 2010, Noncredit, Agriculture & Natural Resources. 2) Contact Piedmont Virginia Community College Workforce Services at (434) 961-5354.

Cost: $149 for four sessions, optional field trip, and workbook.

More info: Contact Stacey Carlberg at (540) 341-0175 or scarlberg@pecva.org.
