When you hear the words value-added products, do you think sumptuous jams and delicious cider, or bar graphs and spreadsheets? Either way, you’re on the right track—value-added products can both tantalize our taste buds and benefit producers’ bottom lines.
Value-added products are made by modifying or enhancing a raw product grown by a farmer. This end product is
deemed value-added because the raw product’s value has been increased, providing the producer with a higher return. Fruits and vegetables can be transformed into high-quality specialty foods, such as jams and salsa, whereas other agricultural products can be modified into non-edible products such as wreaths, dried flowers, and soaps.
As consumers, we relish (also a value-added product!) these one-of-a-kind delights that reflect the unique characteristics of our community. Consider the recently unveiled hard cider from Albemarle CiderWorks at Vintage Virginia Apples. The Shelton family transforms an array of their heritage apples into a uniquely Virginian product that captures the agricultural heritage of our region. And at Planet Earth Diversified, Mike Clark uses his hot peppers to make jellies and a hot sauce dubbed All Wee Wee’d Up! Clark describes it as a “stimulus sauce that is produced
under our ‘cash for peppers’ ag stimulus package.”Stimulate is exactly what value-added products can do to a farm operation, by providing higher returns and steady income. No bailouts needed.
